Many people around Monroe County, Indiana remember Clarence Noble Eddleman as
the friendly truck driver with one hand.
His right hand was shot off by a drunk man
who mistook Clarence for someone else, when Clarence was only 12 years old.
Subsequently, Clarence endured further pain when a school teacher would slap
Clarence's hand with a ruler because Clarence was not able to write well with
his remaining (left) hand. Clarence ultimately left school, and left his parents'
home, and moved in with his Grandfather, George Washington Timmons, who was to be
a powerful influence on Clarence's life.
Clarence did not concede that his missing hand was a handicap. He used to astonish
his grandchildren as he carried a cup full of hot coffee on his stub. He worked
hard, building roads with the WPA program in the 1920's and spending decades as
a local-delivery truck driver in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.
Grandfather loved nature, spending much time outside. He was an avid hunter of
morels (honeycomb mushrooms) in the Springtime, a passion he learned from his
Grandfather Timmons. He loved telling stories and he liked to laugh.
Although his
formal education was cut-short following his school teacher's ridicule of Clarence
having only one hand, Clarence was an avid reader and seized opportunities to learn
things.
Clarence was very interested in family history. I have often wished that I could
go back in a time machine one time and write down all of the names and places that
he talked about. He would have been very enthuised about our family's genealogy
project.

The August 13, 1783 edition of The Pennsylvania Gazette
(PHILADELPHIA, August 13), provides a list of about 200 people who had
been liberated from many years of captivity by several Tribes of
Native Americans. This list was given by Captain Dalton, Superintendant
of Indian Affairs for the United States. This list can be seen at
http://www.shawhan.com/indianprisoners.html.
Included on the list are Katy Etelmaw, David Etelmaw and
Daniel Etelmaw.
It seems likely that these are our Catherine Eddleman and her two
young sons, John and Daniel. (Perhaps our John Eddleman was
John David or David John. We know that our John Eddleman would have
been about 6 years old at the time of the
Ruddle's Station
Massacre of 1780, which occurred at what is now Cynthiana, Kentucky.)
